Cosmic Mesa: 2 by BenDiAnna Cosmic Mesa: 2 by BenDiAnna
Abiquiu Lake, New Mexico

Same location as the last one
Cosmic Mesa

Here, I used different settings and I stacked 3 images vertically to capture what could be seen of the Milky Way that night.
This one is of course sharper than the other shot.

Gorgeous work! Abiquiu seems like a wonderful place for nature photography. I was only there once, but it sure left and impression on my memory.

I gotta say, when I first pulled into the campground there I was not immediately impressed and thought about checking out some other locations. I'm glad a stayed since I took one of my best photos there and once I looked closer I found the area to be very beautiful.

I've enjoyed many hours straining my neck to gaze at the stars in Utah's clear dry air but this brings out so much more than I could see. Great shot.

Thank you! I've been longing to make a visit to Utah, especially for night photography. It looks like a place I could spend months taking photos and never get tired of, and I would! I just have this job thing that's always getting in the way of fun trips. :D

Life just isn't fair. I hope you manage to get to Utah some day though. With a little planning you can see a lot in just two weeks.

Wow, this is amazing!

I envy the skies you get in New Mexico. Most nights in England are really cloudy and even in summer when we have the best opportunities to view the Milky Way, we NEVER see anything as beautiful as this. Can I ask, does the sky look this great to the naked eye?

Ha, boy I wish it really looked like this! :D
No, it looks more like a very faint almost colorless glow, like a thin flat transparent cloud that lines across the night sky; you wouldn't think it would look like this if you photographed it, but it is very apparent once your eyes adjust to the dark. The camera brings out much more light and detail than our eyes could ever pick up, which is what makes this photo so beautiful and what makes night photography so fun! As long as there isn't a bright light-polluting city near by ;)

Beautiful capture!
Urban dwellers often do not even realize how majestic night sky can be without all the light pollution.
You need to travel for several hours (in my case, for sure) to find complete darkness at night, but then being out in the wild is a rewarding experience by itself.

Amazing photo! I love the vibrant colors of the sky. The stars are so vibrant and seem to sparkle. This photo fills me with wonder and yet makes me feel so small in the grand scheme of things. The shutter speed and exposure is perfect. Great job!
